Luminator Expands From Hardware Supplier to Digital Transit Technology Partner
9/28/2026

Luminator is shifting its business from primarily providing onboard hardware for buses and rail vehicles to offering integrated technology that combines hardware, software, data, and artificial intelligence.
The Plano, TX-based company, which has supplied transit hardware for nearly a century, is developing an interconnected technology platform focused on three areas: passenger information, safety and security, and fleet-wide visibility.
The transformation reflects a broader shift in transit technology, as agencies increasingly seek systems that can share information across multiple applications rather than operate as stand-alone products.
“We are building for what our customers will need next, not only what they need today,” said Magnus Friberg, Luminator chief executive officer. “That means architecture designed to adapt, hardware built to last, software that keeps getting better, and data and analytics that give agencies deeper insight over time.”
Luminator says its approach centers on open standards and interoperability, allowing its hardware and software to work within broader transit technology environments. The company also is emphasizing scalable software platforms that can evolve as agencies add capabilities and new technologies.
Rather than focusing on individual products, the company is working to integrate its technology into a common architecture, with the goal of providing consistent performance across deployments.
The transformation also involves changes within the company. Luminator has invested in employee training, process improvements, and continuous learning as it expands its software and digital capabilities.
“For nearly a century, Luminator was known as a provider of onboard hardware for bus and rail vehicles,” Friberg said. “Today, we are a different company.”
Luminator will discuss its technology strategy and digital products with transit agencies and industry stakeholders at APTA’s 2026 EXPO, Oct. 5–7 in Chicago, IL, where the company will exhibit in Booth 659.
