WeGo Expands Workforce Pathways for Drivers, Mechanics

WeGo Public Transit is expanding hiring and training pathways for bus drivers and mechanics as Nashville’s voter-approved Choose How You Move program provides funding for transportation improvement. The agency hired 222 drivers from July 2025 to February 2026, a 258 percent increase over the previous year, and continues to grow its workforce through paid training and apprenticeship programs.
Public transit providers across North America have faced a shortage of drivers and mechanics, partially due to training needs. WeGo’s driver training program allows hires without a commercial driver’s license to be paid while they train and earn CDL certification before moving into full-time roles.
“We can now recruit people who have the talent and interest in operator and mechanic positions and yet need extra training to prepare themselves for the role,” said WeGo Chief Administrative Officer Vince Malone. “It provides more opportunity for job applicants who want to grow with the agency and ultimately helps us to fill critical positions.”
The agency’s Mechanic Apprenticeship Program in one of 34 recognized transit agency apprenticeship programs in the U.S. The program is designed to move participants into starting mechanic positions at WeGo, with additional opportunities for advancement. The program is taught in agency maintenance facilities, where apprentices work on active fleet buses.
“Our apprenticeship program accelerates the development of diesel mechanics by allowing apprentices to learn in a hands-on environment, helping to service our active fleet, with pay and benefits,” said WeGo Director of Training and Development Tiarra Dunn. “This program reflects our commitment to building a highly skilled workforce, expanding access to meaningful career pathways, and delivering reliable service to our customers.”
