Ignite Interest in Transportation Careers

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA), OH, is promoting careers in public transportation and attracting talent, while highlighting career pathways for its existing workforce. The agency collaborated with APTA to host and market a series of recruitment, retention, and training outreach activities and events. These include:

• A bus driver “red carpet” career fair with applicants featured as VIPs.
• Community recruitment sessions at Cleveland public libraries.
• An inaugural bus driver “pre-training” in collaboration with Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland & East Central Ohio.

In addition, GCRTA featured mechanics and bus drivers in a video series that shows their daily routine. The videos were shared with community partners and schools.

Organizations looking for ideas are encouraged to sign-up for APTA’s National Transit Career Day, which takes place November 12. A few initiatives that have been a success at GCRTA include:

• Coffee and conversation sessions for staff
• Veteran outreach initiatives
• Social media and digital career awareness campaigns
