SFMTA Director of Transportation Jeffrey Tumlin to Step Down

12/17/2024

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Director of Transportation Jeffrey Tumlin is to step down at the end of 2024. Tumlin has led SFMTA since December 2019. Director of Transit Julie Kirschbaum will serve as acting director of transportation beginning Jan. 1.

During Tumlin’s tenure, SFMTA completed two transformative capital projects: the Van Ness BRT Corridor and the Central Subway. He was a champion of the Muni Forward program, through which the agency has installed more than 75 miles of transit lanes and more than 100 miles of overall transit priority improvements. He supported SFMTA mechanics’ embrace of preventive maintenance through programs like the agency’s regular Fix It! Weeks.

Tumlin also promoted culture change within SFMTA that encouraged employees to speak out about ideas for improving service and supported the creation of SFMTA’s Office of Civil Rights to better deliver on the agency’s vision of equity and justice in San Francisco’s transportation system.

Before SFMTA, Tumlin was principal and director of strategy at Nelson\Nygaard. For APTA, he is a member of the Public Transportation CEO Coordinating Council and serves on the Bus & Paratransit CEOs, Rail Transit CEOs, Legacy Systems, and Mid-Size Operations committees.
