Portland’s Oldest TriMet Station Modernized
1/12/2026

One of oldest TriMet Metropolitan Area Express (MAX) light rail stations in Portland, OR, has fully reopened after extensive renovation to improve safety and rider experience. Originally constructed in 1986, the busy NE 82nd Ave MAX station had been undergoing infrastructure upgrades for the past six months as part of efforts to invest in the long-term reliability of the system.
The station had been kept open with a temporary platform and stairs. With renovations complete, riders will benefit from a new platform with enhanced lighting, a wider stairway to reduce crowding, and an upgraded and new shelter for better weather protection. To improve accessibility, the station features new concrete, tactile strips, and digital displays. Security upgrades include blue-light security phones and new, higher-quality security cameras. Durable materials were used to withstand heavy daily use and help prevent misuse. (See TriMet’s short YouTube video of the overhaul).
TriMet is also phasing out its original Type 1 trains, also in service since 1986 and reaching the end of their life. Modernized Type 6 trains, first introduced a year ago, are an important investment in keeping the system modernized, comfortable, and safe.
Maintaining infrastructure is essential to providing safe and reliable transit service. It helps prevent costly failures and minimizes service disruptions for riders. These projects ensure that stations can handle current and future ridership demands.
