PATH’s New Map Puts Accessibility Front and Center
5/14/2026

At first glance, New Jersey and New York’s Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rapid transit system’s new map may not appear that different from the prior version. However, subtle changes can make a big difference when it comes to figuring out a train change at a glance.
The changes prioritize accessibility by making the map easier to read for people with visual impairments. In a blog post, PATH media relations staff Steve Burns explains some of the updates:
- Simple diagonal design versus geographic accuracy
- The utility of a big dot
- Placement and treatment of the Hudson River
- Prominence of important connections
- Day and night service schedules
- Color contrast and readability
Why the change? Burns says, “With the throngs of first-time riders and out-of-town visitors expected this summer for the World Cup, celebrations for America’s 250th birthday, and new service changes requiring new maps anyway, we thought it was a good chance to give it a rethink.”
