New Flyer of America Inc. has been awarded a contract by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro / WMATA) for a mix of zero-emission and hybrid buses. The contract encompasses up to 500 buses, including a firm order for 75 Xcelsior hybrid-electric 40-foot vehicles and 25 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 35-foot battery-electric vehicles, with options for up to 400 additional buses.
“New Flyer and Metro have enjoyed working together for thirty years,” said Chris Stoddart, president of North American Bus and Coach at NFI. “This new contract for the latest bus technology embraces healthy contracting measures and is paving the way for long-term benefits for both New Flyer and Metro. By striking a balance between bonding and payment schedules, it offers flexibility in pricing and delivery timelines to mitigate potential supply chain disruptions or other challenges.”

In addition, the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) is adding 265 zero-emission buses to its fleet. These options, part of a Q1 2024 contract between New Flyer and MTA, allow for the purchase of 193 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 40-foot buses and 72 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 60-foot buses (144 equivalent units).
“Our 25-year partnership with the MTA has been built on trust, innovation, and delivering reliable transportation solutions,” said Stoddart. “This builds upon MTA’s original firm order of 205 Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses.”
New Flyer also announces that Long Beach Transit (LBT) has signed a contract for 30 battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG 40-foot buses.

“New Flyer has partnered with Long Beach Transit for nearly 30 years, delivering over 300 buses, and we are thrilled to continue this meaningful collaboration,” continued Stoddart. “This latest order showcases LBT’s commitment to innovative vehicles that leverage cutting-edge technologies for superior performance, furthering their transition to greener alternatives.”
