APTA and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) gave local high schoolers a firsthand look at careers in public transportation at a pre-National Transit Career Day event at APTA HQ on November 5. To be held November 12, National Transit Career Day is an opportunity for the industry to come together to introduce students, job seekers, and current employees to the possibilities of a career in public transportation.

Students from Francis L. Cardozo High School and Dunbar High School came to APTA HQ to take part in a transportation careers panel, a hands-on operations activity, a networking lunch with transit professionals, and a student-led panel. Representatives from Icomera, US Inc., and the COMTO DC Chapter also participated in the event, and WMATA supplied a bus for participants to explore.

The event comes as WMATA continues to recruit bus drivers, mechanics, transit police officers, and other essential workers. In September, the agency held a hiring event focused on bus mechanics.

APTA members are encouraged to sign up for National Transit Career Day in advance of the celebration on November 12. Visit APTA’s National Transit Career Day webpage to sign up and explore a wealth of resources.
