MBTA Completes Major Infrastructure Work on Green Line
8/20/2026

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) completed work on two major infrastructure projects along its Green Line. The first involves critical signal upgrades within the central Green Line tunnel; the second involves improving accessibility on the C Branch.
MBTA is upgrading its Green Line signal system, which is more than 100 years old, with modern technology. The new signal system will provide improved train detection, better train management within the tunnel, and more consistent train spacing. These improvements translate to more reliable service for riders with fewer repair-related disruptions.
Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng said, “Upgrading our 100-year-old legacy Green Line signal system is essential. These signal upgrades are a critical component for reliable train movements. These new signals will provide the operational flexibility that is necessary to run a world-class system, with the ability to improve schedules, respond to situations more quickly, and avoid or better mitigate service impacts.”
At the same time, work was completed on the Green Line C Branch Station Accessibility Improvements project as well as on other projects on the Green Line. The work took place over a nine-day outage period that provided unencumbered access to the area, allowing work to be completed in an accelerated timeline and saving millions of dollars compared to multiple outages.
