2026 APTAtech: Turning Innovation Into Action 

The 2026 APTAtech demonstrated how innovation in public transportation is not simply about adopting the latest technology. It is about bringing the right people together to tackle real challenges, exchange ideas, and turn promising concepts into practical solutions. Held August 9–12 at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel, the 450 attendees experienced four days of conversation, collaboration, and hands-on learning around the theme of “Innovation.” 

APTAtech brought technology and fare collection communities closer together. The conference created a broader conversation about how technology is changing the way transit agencies operate and how riders experience public transportation. Across 24 breakout sessions, participants explored issues including artificial intelligence, data governance, autonomous vehicles, cybersecurity, digital twins, mobility as a service, workforce development, account-based ticketing, open payments, interoperability, and fare collection modernization. APTAtech connected those emerging technologies to the realities of running a transit system. 

APTAtech provided opportunities for participants to step away from the traditional conference format and become active contributors to the conversation. FareTech Lab put fare collection professionals and technology leaders in the same room to talk openly about the issues they are actually facing. Discussions ranged from account-based ticketing and open payments to fare evasion, revenue protection, cybersecurity, mobile ticketing, fare policy, vendor performance and accountability, and data analytics. Instead of simply listening to experts, participants shared their own experiences, challenges, and lessons learned. The result was a conversation driven by the people closest to the work. 

The conference closed by taking that spirit of collaboration one step further with the Innovation Challenge. Teams were given pressing transit industry problems and challenged to develop creative, feasible solutions before pitching their ideas to a panel of judges. The exercise was competitive, but its greater value was in the collaboration it created. Participants had to listen to different perspectives, challenge assumptions, develop ideas quickly, and turn those ideas into a compelling solution. It was innovation in practice rather than innovation as a talking point. 

Taken together, these experiences made the 2026 APTAtech more than another technology conference. It became a forum for connecting ideas to action and technology to the broader business of public transportation. The interactive programming underscored how the transit community is looking for new ways to learn from one another and solve problems together. 

The success of the 2026 APTAtech was reflected in the conversations that continued between sessions, the new relationships formed, the ideas exchanged, and the solutions developed collaboratively. The conference demonstrated that when the public transportation industry creates space for people to share what they know, question what they do, and imagine what could be done differently, innovation becomes more than a theme.
