USDOT Grant to Upgrade DART South Dallas Light Rail Stations

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has been awarded a $25 million grant from USDOT to modernize infrastructure and upgrade security at eight station platforms. The agency said the regional infrastructure projects will have significant community impact. In the longer term, APTA data shows that investments in public transportation contribute to strong economic growth.
“This grant funding continues our commitment to modernizing our entire system,” said Trenise Winters, DART’s chief operating officer. “Upgrading these eight South Dallas stations means providing a smoother, safer journey for thousands of our passengers every day.”
The project includes removing center crosswalks at station platforms and leveling at eight stations. The improvements will provide level boarding for greater access, especially for those with limited mobility and people traveling with rolling luggage or a stroller. The grant will also support upgraded way-finding signage and security systems.
Upgrades are scheduled to begin in 2027; work will be completed in phases until completion in 2030. The grant helps the agency significantly decrease the amount of local funding needed to cover project costs and ensures that DART can continue working to keep the system in a state of good repair.
