RFTA Launching Fare-Free Bus Route to Test Demand and Future Routes

6/15/2026

Getting to and from key destinations in and around Aspen, CO, will be free this summer. Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) is introducing a new fare-free transit pilot in the upper Roaring Fork Valley, made possible through Colorado’s SB 230 transit funding program, combined with RFTA resources.

The transit funding program supports new and expanded transit services and improved regional mobility. On June 28, RFTA is launching the Flyer, a year-round, daily bus route operating during peak morning and evening commute hours. It will connect to key stops including the Aspen airport, schools, recreation center, and medical center.

The pilot service is expected to run through 2027 and will test demand, evaluate travel patterns, and inform future service decisions. RFTA will use rider usage and feedback to shape how the service evolves over time.

The cost-free service provides an alternative to driving and paying for parking. By taking advantage of a free down-valley park and ride, commuters can connect to up-valley destinations without having to travel into Aspen.
