Testing Last-Mile Connections: NJ TRANSIT Pilots Microtransit

4/6/2026

NJ TRANSIT is piloting a program that will offer free connections to major bus stops and park-and-rides in two counties, linking customers to the agency’s fixed-route bus network. The microtransit pilot is being conducted in partnership with Via and with funding from FTA. It is designed to provide first- and last-mile connections to the broader public transportation network.

The pilot program is called “MicroLink powered by NJ TRANSIT.” The free, on-demand and ADA-complaint service will operate from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays in Monmouth and Bergen counties. NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri called the program, “a new way to make transit more accessible and convenient.” He said, “By offering flexible, on-demand service, we are helping customers more easily connect to our bus network while also expanding access to the broader transit system for a more seamless trip.”

How It Works

Customers can reserve rides via the MicroLink app (similar to rideshare services) or by phone. Pickup and drop-off points must be within established MicroLink zones. All trips must have an NJ TRANSIT bus stop as an origin or destination point. While MicroLink trips are ADA accessible, the service is distinct from the agency’s dedicated paratransit service for people with disabilities.

Data Collection

During the pilot, NJ TRANSIT will monitor ridership demand, customer feedback, and service efficiency. The collected data will be used to determine if similar microtransit zones can be established elsewhere in the state.
