Seattle-Area Transit Center to Bring Investments, Connectivity
2/11/2026

Speakers at a groundbreaking event for a new transit center in Renton, WA, focused on the benefits that come from investments in public transportation. These include “access, opportunity, and regional equity,” said King County Councilmember and Sound Transit Board Member Steffanie Fain.

The center aims to strengthen connections around Lake Washington, with Seattle to the west, Renton in the south, and the areas east and north of the lake, as well as across the broader King County region.
“Our riders count on these connections to reach work, school, and family,” said Fain. The groundbreaking marks the start of an effort to relocate the Renton Transit Center to move passengers along a faster, more reliable route as part of Sound Transit’s Stride BRT project. The Stride line will:
- Offer service on double-decker battery-electric buses running every 10-15 minutes, 17+ hours a day
- Run primarily in HOV and dedicated transit infrastructure to reduce travel time and provide connections to light rail stations

With 10,000-12,000 new jobs coming to the Renton area related to a new Seattle Children’s Hospital campus and Alaska Airlines training facility, Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone remarked that the Stride project provides critical transportation for residents and business. “The relocation of the transit center gives us an incredible opportunity to invite redevelopment of this area into a transit-oriented, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood.”
Speaking on behalf of the Seattle Building & Construction Trades Council, Executive Secretary Monty Anderson acknowledged the partnership with Sound Transit, the City of Renton, and regional leaders and staff to “create economic opportunity for generations of working people and better connect communities.”
Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine said, “The new Renton Transit Center will not only be a hub for Stride but an asset for Renton and the entire Central Puget Sound.”
