VIA Metropolitan Transit Modernizes Fleet Video Systems with Advanced Safety Technology

VIA Metropolitan Transit is undertaking a multi-year technology modernization initiative that will enhance onboard safety, improve incident response, and strengthen security across its bus fleet through the deployment of next-generation video surveillance systems.

The San Antonio, TX, transit agency is partnering with Safety Vision LLC to replace aging onboard video equipment with modern hardware and the company’s SafetyNet video management platform. The first phase of the program will upgrade surveillance technology on 361 fixed-route buses, with additional fleet modernization efforts planned in future phases.

For VIA’s more than two million service-area residents, the upgraded systems are expected to provide clearer video coverage, expanded recording capabilities, and faster retrieval of footage when incidents occur. The technology is designed to support both customer and operator safety while helping create a more secure transit environment.

At the center of the upgrade is Safety Vision’s Network Video Recorder (NVR) technology and SafetyNet enterprise video management software. The system provides VIA staff with enhanced tools to locate, review, and share video footage, reducing the time required to investigate incidents, respond to claims, and coordinate with law enforcement when needed.

Modern video management systems are becoming increasingly important components of transit agencies’ broader safety strategies. Beyond traditional surveillance, these platforms can help agencies analyze incidents, improve emergency response, support operator protection efforts, and provide critical documentation during investigations.

“Our solutions deliver advanced recording and storage technology while leveraging VIA’s existing infrastructure, maximizing the agency’s investment and minimizing disruption to daily transit operations,” said Jeff Taylor, senior account executive with Safety Vision LLC.

Rather than replacing the entire onboard technology infrastructure, VIA is using custom NVR conversion kits to upgrade its existing fleet. This approach allows the agency to preserve previous investments while gaining significant improvements in recording quality, storage capacity, and system management.

The installation is being completed at VIA’s maintenance facility, allowing the agency to control the deployment process while minimizing impacts on daily operations. Safety Vision technical and project management staff are supporting the effort through installation, testing, and final acceptance.

The fleet modernization also demonstrates how transit agencies are increasingly using technology to extend the useful life of existing assets. By strategically upgrading onboard systems instead of pursuing complete replacements, agencies can achieve meaningful improvements in safety and reliability while managing costs.
