Train Traffic Begins Over New San Juan Creek Bridge

A major step forward in strengthening rail reliability along Southern California’s busy Los Angeles–San Diego–San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) rail corridor has been reached with the opening of the new San Juan Creek Bridge in San Juan Capistrano. Trains are now traveling over the newly constructed structure, replacing a bridge that had served the region for more than a century.
The project, led by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in partnership with Metrolink, represents a key investment in the long-term safety, resiliency, and efficiency of passenger and freight operations on one of the nation’s busiest intercity rail lines.
“This new bridge represents an important investment in safety and efficiency for the thousands of passengers and freight customers who depend on this rail line every day,” said OCTA Chair Doug Chaffee. “By replacing an aging structure that has served the region for more than a century, we’re ensuring that train service through this area remains reliable and resilient for decades to come.”
Constructed immediately adjacent to the original 1917 bridge, the new structure meets modern engineering and safety standards, including upgraded foundations and improved flood protection for the San Juan Creek channel below.
The $65 million project was funded through a combination of local, state, and federal sources, including Orange County’s voter-approved Measure M half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements.
The bridge replacement is part of OCTA’s broader initiative to maintain and modernize critical rail infrastructure throughout the county. By investing in resilient, state-of-the-art projects like this one, OCTA and Metrolink are helping to ensure that rail remains a safe, efficient, and sustainable travel option for Southern California’s growing population.
