Siemens to Build First U.S. High-Speed Rail Production Facility
9/11/2024
Siemens Mobility is to build the U.S.’s first high-speed rail production facility, in Horseheads, NY. The facility initially will produce the American Pioneer 220 high-speed train, which will operate on Brightline West’s Las Vegas to Southern California line. Vehicle production is expected to begin in 2026. The facility will span nearly 300,000 square feet and create approximately 300 jobs.
“Siemens’ investment in upstate New York will lay the foundation for the next chapter of our nation’s transportation future, making high-speed rail, what only a few years ago seemed like a dream, become a reality because of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law,” said Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY). “After months of relentless advocacy, I am proud to announce this massive 300-job, first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility for America is coming to upstate New York.”
“With Leader Schumer, the Biden Administration, and Brightline’s leadership, we will transform the way Americans travel, continuing our more than four-decade legacy of building trains in America” said Marc Buncher, CEO, Siemens Mobility North America.
The Siemens American Pioneer 220 empty tube body concept ensures passengers in wheelchairs can seamlessly move from car to car throughout the entire trainset, exceeding ADA requirements. The trains will feature large seats and high-speed internet connectivity, and a first-of-its-kind lounge car will offer passengers views of the desert along the commute.
“Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Leader Schumer’s strong support of it in the Senate, this is a transformative time for American rail, and today’s announcement is yet another example of how investments in transportation bring economic opportunity and growth around the country,” said FRA Administrator Amit Bose. “Millions of annual riders between Las Vegas and Southern California stand to benefit from the train sets to be built in upstate New York, and I know the local community will benefit as well.”
