Santa Clara VTA—the Easiest Way to Get to World Cup Matches

6/8/2026

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) held a press conference to encourage fans travelling to World Cup matches in San Jose, CA, to take public transit. Speaking at the event, Santa Clara Councilmember and VTA Board Member Sudhanshu “Suds” Jain said public transit is the easiest, most affordable, and most sustainable way to get to major events in Santa Clara—“People are increasingly choosing transit and transit is delivering.”

VTA General Manager and CEO Carolyn Gonot talked about the agency’s record-breaking ridership levels, vast preparation for the games, and the agency’s goal to make transit the easiest way to get to and from the matches while continuing to serve everyday riders. She advised fans to plan ahead, allow extra time, be patient, purchase passes in advance, and have a great time.

VTA will help connect fans to the stadium, airport, regional connections, and other event locations. Before and after matches, VTA will run additional light rail until platforms are cleared. Dozens of VTA ambassadors—including Jain—will help assist riders through the system.

VTA Vice Chair and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan highlighted that taking transit to the world cup is good for fans, roads, the environment, and the overall experience, resulting in less stress and road congestion. If that doesn’t convince you, listen to Bay Area consulate generals from Austria, Jordan, and Switzerland—countries with matches in San Jose and among the highest public transit ridership in the world—who encouraged fans to hop on public transit.
