Pace Advances Electrification with Bus Charging Depot
1/6/2026

In 2026, transit agencies continue to adopt zero emission technology for healthier communities and stronger economies. In Illinois, Pace Suburban Bus recently completed the first phase of a project to convert buses to battery-electric vehicles. The opening of a large-scale bus charging depot, with 10 pedestal chargers and high-speed charging capability, moves the agency closer to its goal of converting 60 North Division buses.
Several state leaders attended the ribbon cutting on December 23, 2025. Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) remarked, “Today’s ribbon cutting shows how smart government investment delivers real results… That means cleaner air, quieter streets, and more reliable transit for the entire community and the families who depend on Pace every day—and strengthens our transit system for the long term.”
State Rep. Rita Mayfield (D) noted, “With electric buses, we’re taking a major step forward—building healthier neighborhoods, creating more jobs, and boosting our local economy.”
In recognition of the employees who make progress on Pace’s Project Zero happen, Pace Executive Director Melinda Metzger calls them “part of a family that believes deeply in public service.”
