Operation Lifesaver Urges Rail Safety During World Cup Travel, Releases Toolkit
5/21/2026

Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) released a Soccer Tournament Toolkit to spread the message that, just as there are rules for soccer games, there are rules guiding safe behavior near tracks and trains. The toolkit includes graphics, PSAs, brochures in multiple languages, and more, that transit agencies can use to reach soccer fans.
Toolkit messages encourage soccer fans to prioritize rail safety as millions travel to World Cup matches this summer and are likely to encounter railroad tracks and trains. The organization emphasizes the importance of recognizing and following rail signs and signals to prevent incidents.
“Being prepared and knowing how to make safe choices around tracks and trains is critically important, especially given the thousands of people who are expected to attend tournament games and related events,” said OLI Executive Director Rachel Maleh.
OLI urged travelers—whether driving, walking, or using public transportation—to remain alert and avoid distractions when near tracks. Key recommendations include crossing only at designated locations, obeying signals and gates, and standing back from platform edges. The organization also advised drivers never to attempt to beat a train and to ensure their vehicle can fully clear crossings.
The campaign is part of OLI’s ongoing national rail safety education efforts aimed at reducing incidents and promoting safe behavior around tracks and trains. Learn more at oli.org.
