In a news conference at Jackie Gleason bus depot in Brooklyn, NY, Christopher Accettulli was honored by New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NYMTA) leaders for the actions he took when a woman on board the bus he was driving went into labor.
As reported by MTA, on the morning of Jan. 23, Accettulli heard a woman repeatedly say “hospital.” He called the Bus Command Center and 911 for assistance. While the bus was stationary, he approached the woman, who was in labor.
With the assistance of emergency responders on the phone, he helped support the women as she delivered the baby and wrapped the newborn in his coat. Emergency medical services arrived on the scene and transported the healthy baby girl and mother to hospital.
A father and 20-year veteran of NYMTA, Accettulli said, “All I thought about was making sure the baby was OK. Everything else was secondary for me.”
At the news conference, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said, “MTA workers rise to the occasion no matter what is coming their way … our workforce is the heart and soul of the MTA.”
