The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA), LA, has begun construction on the long-awaited Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation Project, a significant effort to modernize one of the region’s key multimodal transit gateways.
Constructed in the late 1970s, the Algiers Ferry Terminal has served generations of riders, even as ferry operations and vessel designs gradually evolved beyond what the original facility was built to support. With dedicated federal funding secured, RTA is now moving forward with a full modernization of the terminal to improve accessibility, enhance rider amenities, and create a more welcoming, functional space for the Algiers community.
“This groundbreaking marks a continuous step in RTA’s investment into modern transit infrastructure that will also strengthen connectivity for Algiers and the region,” said CEO Lona Edwards Hankins. “This project reflects our commitment to delivering a world class rider experience, innovation, and regional connectivity.”
The renovation of the Algiers Ferry Terminal and maintenance building represents an $11.4 million investment, supported by FTA funding, Federal Highway Administration ferry funds flexed to FTA, and local match provided by the RTA.
The project will deliver a redesigned accessible boarding ramp, improvements to the pedestrian bridge, a full interior upgrade, and a new second-floor office level. The first floor will be transformed into a space that can support future community and passenger-serving uses. Other improvements include new rider shelters; lighting and landscaping upgrades; stormwater enhancements; and redesigned circulation to better support walking, biking, accessibility, and transit access.
The construction contract was awarded to CDW Services, with Batture Engineering LLC serving as the engineering firm during the design phase and Studio West serving as the architectural firm during the design phase.
Construction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
