Metra Construction Program Supports Jobs and Rail Safety

4/10/2026

More than three-quarters of federal transit funding (77 percent) flows to the private sector, including for construction projects. Chicago and Northeastern Illinois’ rail system, Metra, provides an example of how transit agency funding contributes to the greater economy.

In 2026, Metra’s upcoming construction projects include improvements to 20 stations, replacement of 22 grade crossings, and three major tie replacement projects—all of which provide American jobs while strengthening safe and reliable rail service.

Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski noted that “infrastructure maintenance is an ongoing need.” The work is being performed by Metra crews, freight partner staff, municipal partners, and private contractors.

Metra’s 2026 capital program allocates:

  • $32.3 million for station and parking improvements
  • $37.7 million for track maintenance
  • $22.3 million for bridge projects
  • $5.2 million for rail crossing replacements
  • $59.1 million for signal, electrical, and communications maintenance and upgrades

While bridge improvement is not yet federally funded, Metra has developed a 20-year plan to replace or rehabilitate nearly half of the agency’s bridges that are more than a century old. A bill has been introduced to fund the long-overdue maintenance, replacement, and rehabilitation of commuter rail bridges across the country.
