MBTA Advances Green Line Safety with Latest Train Protection System Technology

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has reached another milestone in the modernization of its Green Line, completing the latest phase of infrastructure work to support the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS)—a technology designed to enhance safety through automated speed enforcement and collision prevention.

The most recent work took place during a seven-day service suspension on the Green Line E Branch between Government Center and Heath Street, allowing crews unrestricted access to install critical wayside infrastructure along the street-running corridor on Huntington Avenue.

With the completion of the E Branch work, MBTA has finished wayside GLTPS infrastructure installation on the Green Line’s B, C, and E branches following three multi-day construction periods this spring. The latest effort included installation of power and messenger cables as well as the anchors that support the new train protection equipment.

“Wayside GLTPS infrastructure is now completely installed along the B, C, and E branches after three multi-day outages that took place this spring,” said Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “Our urgency to complete this long-awaited project reflects our commitment to upgrading our infrastructure in order to operate the safest service possible.”

Unlike traditional signaling systems that rely primarily on operator actions, GLTPS integrates onboard vehicle technology with trackside equipment to continuously monitor train movements. When fully deployed, the system will automatically help prevent train-to-train collisions, enforce speed restrictions, and provide an additional layer of operational protection for both riders and trolley drivers.
