MARTA’s Station Upgrades: Improving Rider Experience and Opportunity

5/28/2026

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has updated several rail stations as part of its $1 billion multi-year Station Rehabilitation Program. Through the program, MARTA is repairing and renovating all 38 heavy rail stations of the nearly 50-year-old system.

“Our systemwide Station Rehabilitation Program is focused on creating safer and cleaner rail stations, and more reliable service for our customers,” said MARTA Interim General Manager and CEO Jonathan Hunt.

Improved infrastructure and amenities made at seven stations include the following:

  • New flooring that is safer and easier to clean
  • New wall surfaces that are brighter, resistant to graffiti, and protected from the elements
  • Lighting upgrades for easier station navigation, particularly at night
  • Deep cleaning and pressure-washing
  • Pedestrian bridges to better connect communities to the system
  • New elevators to improve accessibility
  • New benches and trash cans
  • New driver platform booths and restrooms, which make it easier for drivers to take breaks and stay on schedule
  • New landscaping

Broader Impact

The station rehab program aims to make the system cleaner, safer, and more reliable. The investment also supports the economy through job creation. In its 2026 Fact Book, APTA estimates that 41,000 jobs are created and supported per $1 billion investment in public transportation.

The enhancements also connect residents to opportunity. For example, the new pedestrian bridge at Indian Creek Station gives residents on Durham Park Road access to the north end of the station.

“For residents in surrounding neighborhoods, this bridge is transformational. It significantly reduces travel time, it provides a safe, accessible route into the station, and it removes barriers that once made transit less convenient,” said Hunt.

A supporter of the transit project, DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson said MARTA provides “a vital connection to jobs, schools, medical appointments, shopping, and countless opportunities that improve the quality of life for our citizens.”
