KC Streetcar Step Closer to Main Street Extension
10/25/2024

The KC Streetcar, Kansas City, MO, has resumed downtown service, marking the completion of critical track tie-in work for the anticipated Main Street Extension, expected in 2025.
Completed ahead of schedule, the three-week construction period allowed the KC Streetcar construction team to connect the current downtown route to the Main Street Extension, the 3.5-mile extension south to UMKC. In addition to track work, the construction team demolished and removed existing track turnouts and track slabs, removed the existing crossover located north of Pershing Road, replaced expansion joints on the Main Street Viaduct, rehabilitated the bridge deck on the Main Street Viaduct, constructed a northbound Union Station stop, installed OCS poles and overhead wires, and paved and striped the roadway and installed new traffic control signage.
“We’re excited to be back in service and to bring Kansas City closer to the future of transit with the Main Street Extension,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority. “We appreciate the community’s patience during the temporary streetcar suspension and are eager to continue serving the downtown area while we make progress on this significant expansion.”
