KC Streetcar Extended to Riverfront
5/20/2026

The KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension in Kansas City, MO, is now open, serving a rapidly growing, walkable riverfront neighborhood. The opening ceremony was attended by elected representatives, KC Streetcar Authority and FTA staff, and more. During the ceremony, thousands rode the streetcar to experience the new line.
The streetcar system is one of the most successful in the United States, spurring billions of dollars in new investment and surpassing ridership projections. The extension adds 0.7 miles of track to the existing line, linking neighborhoods, educational institutions, cultural destinations, entertainment districts, businesses, and the Berkley Riverfront. Importantly, the extension connects River Market and the riverfront, which are separated by railroad tracks.
“The Kansas City Streetcar system has been transformative for the city and its residents,” said HDR Project Manager James Rice. HDR worked closely with Kansas City, the KC Streetcar Authority, Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, Port KC, and community stakeholders on the extension, including helping with design, construction support, and startup testing.
