IndyGo Completes Major Bus Stop Upgrades on Near Eastside, Advancing Accessibility and Community Connectivity

The IndyGo Foundation has marked a significant milestone in Indianapolis’ mobility landscape with the unveiling of 22 newly upgraded bus stops on the city’s Near Eastside—bringing its year-long Bus Stop Improvement Project to a successful close. The enhancements, designed to meet ADA standards, include new sidewalks in areas previously lacking pedestrian infrastructure and concrete landing pads that improve accessibility for riders using wheelchairs, pushing strollers, or traveling by bicycle.

These upgrades represent the final phase of a broader effort that has transformed 79 bus stops over the past year. The $2 million initiative was supported through a collaborative partnership among IndyGo, the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works, FTA, and several corporate donors.

“Improving connection to life’s essential services means ensuring IndyGo’s bus stops are accessible for every individual,” said IndyGo President and CEO Jennifer Pyrz. “Upgrades like these are necessary to ensure our riders have access to safe and reliable mobility experiences.”

Formed in 2018, the IndyGo Foundation continues to play a critical role in advancing the agency’s mission to expand equitable mobility options. Through fundraising and community partnerships, the foundation helps align public transportation investments with broader goals around economic opportunity, neighborhood connectivity, and public health.

“We are grateful to our sponsors, Indiana University Health, the Fifth Third Foundation, and MIBOR REALTOR Association, for their support of this project,” said IndyGo Foundation Executive Director Emily Meaux. “We know every transit rider begins and ends as a pedestrian. These projects are a visible expression of our commitment to equity.”

With the Near Eastside project complete, IndyGo is preparing to accelerate its systemwide improvements. The agency will begin work next year on the Far Eastside Bus Stop Improvement Project, which will upgrade 55 additional stops and install six pedestrian traffic signals to strengthen safety and sidewalk connectivity across the corridor. As IndyGo continues investing in its network of 2,362 bus stops, these improvements signal the agency’s ongoing commitment to creating a more accessible and inclusive mobility system for all riders.
