In Memoriam: Anne O’Neil

Anne O’Neil, P.E., CSEP, a respected engineer, died July 19. Her career in the public sector spanned more than 30 years, with a focus on transportation.

O’Neil established AOC Systems Consulting LLC in 2014 and advised organizations globally who were adopting and applying systems engineering practices and capabilities. Before that, she was with MTA New York City Transit, where she served as principal communications engineer and then chief systems engineer, capital programs. She also held positions at Parsons Transportation Group, TransCore, Jacobs, and Stone & Webster.

One of her notable projects was work on the “Big Dig” in Boston, a major infrastructure project that rerouted Interstate 93 underground and extended Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) to Logan International Airport.

O’Neil became a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) while a student at Tufts. In 2002, she received SWE’s Distinguished New Engineer Award.

She served in multiple leadership roles for several organizations, including APTA, where she had been vice chair of the Systems Lifecycle Engineering Subcommittee and a member of the Business Member Development and Membership, Mobility Management, Connected and Automated Vehicle, and Business Member Small Business committees, among others.
