HRT Expands Affordable OnDemand Ridesharing

1/27/2026

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is expanding its OnDemand Ridesharing to Chesapeake and Hampton, and extending service in Newport News, VA. The service offers affordable transportation for those without vehicles and in areas with limited fixed-route bus service.

Like HRT’s other modes of transit, fares are $2 per person per ride. Qualified paratransit riders, and others like students and kids, ride for free. Service is available within about 15 minutes of a request during operating hours. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available upon request.

“Our OnDemand Ridesharing, known in the transit industry as microtransit, is a new mode of transit that is ideal for the first or last leg of a fixed-route trip—it bridges an important gap to ensure customers have access to reliable, safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation,” said HRT’s President and CEO William E. Harrell.

Customers can request a ride via a mobile app or over the phone. Rides operate within specific zones and pick up customers traveling in similar directions. Customers who want to go beyond the city’s zone are dropped off near an HRT bus station for onward travel. The mobile app provides a map of the service area and lets riders track their vehicle in real-time.

The service will be available through October 2026, at which point it will be evaluated for future potential. Learn more about the program.
