Houston METRO Expansion Serves World Cup and Beyond
2/23/2026

In advance of the World Cup games hosted in Houston this summer, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (Houston METRO) is providing a new service to William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). The route provides direct access to HOU via the 500 Downtown Direct bus, which also serves the area’s other major airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
Additional stops will be added at the Downtown Transit Center and other key downtown locations. The expanded route creates a direct link between both airports and the city center. With an influx of visitors expected during the World Cup games, the route will serve fans as well as the needs of the community.
METRO Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock remarked on the short- and long-term benefits of the expansion. “As we prepare to welcome the world for the World Cup, we’re building connectivity that will serve Houston long after the final match. This is about lasting access that strengthens our region every day.”
With a one-way fare of $4.50 and complimentary Wi-Fi, Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports, said that the route offers a reliable, affordable connection between downtown and HOU, reduces stress, and improves access.
