Hitachi Rail Acquires Clever Devices

Hitachi Rail has completed its acquisition of Clever Devices, a U.S.-based provider of Intelligent Transportation Systems for public transit agencies worldwide. The acquisition expands Hitachi Rail’s portfolio beyond rail into multimodal mobility and strengthens its North American business.

Clever Devices has more than 600 employees and projected 2026 revenue of more than $220 million. Its customer base includes eight of the 10 largest North American transit agencies. Clever Devices’ technology supports fleet management, passenger information, and operational efficiency for bus, rail, and other public mobility systems.

Hitachi Rail said the company’s Intelligent Transportation System solutions help improve the accuracy of passenger information and support service punctuality. Clever Devices’ onboard and centralized data solutions will augment Hitachi’s HMAX Mobility suite, including HMAX for Rail, the company’s digital asset management platform that connects data from trains, signaling assets, and infrastructure to create an operational twin of rail systems.

“This is a key step in advancing our strategy to drive the digital transformation of public transport,” said Hitachi Rail Group CEO Giuseppe Marino. “With this acquisition, we are broadening our scope beyond rail, strengthening our footprint in North America and laying the platform to help cities develop more integrated, sustainable, and efficient transportation networks.”
