ENS Sign Awareness Day Is June 24

6/10/2025

National nonprofit rail safety organization Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) is launching the first-ever ENS Sign Awareness Day June 24. The initiative raises awareness about the rectangular Blue and White Emergency Notification System (ENS) signs located where roadways cross railroad tracks and educates the general public and first responders on how to find and use ENS signs when seconds count.

ENS signs provide a phone number and location information needed to quickly report emergencies or safety concerns around tracks and trains directly to the railroad. Knowing how to spot and use these signs can help prevent tragedies and ensure a faster emergency response.

What public transit agencies can do:

  • Engage locally by hosting or attending community events or safety blitzes and connect with your State Coordinator.
  • Promote the ENS sign in newsletters, on social media and intranets, and in conversations with friends, family, and colleagues.
  • Connect with first responders and share the importance of the ENS sign as well as OLI’s free RISC training.
  • Follow and tag OLI on social media.
  • Invite partners to share the messaging and participate in the observance.
  • Share OLI’s ready-to-use PSAs, videos, and social media posts.

OLI wants to hear how public transit agencies and communities are spreading the word about ENS signs on ENS Sign Awareness Day and beyond. Share stories, pictures, and posts at [email protected].
