Dina El-Tawansy Named New Director of Caltrans

7/29/2025

Dina El-Tawansy has been appointed director of California DOT (Caltrans). She has served the agency for three decades, most recently as Bay Area District 4 director—the first woman to hold that position.

Before Bay Area District 4 director, El-Tawansy was chief deputy director for the same district. She also served as acting assistant divisions chief for project and program management in HQ (Sacramento) and deputy district director of operations and maintenance in D12 (Orange County).

As Caltrans director, El-Tawansy will manage a nearly $20 billion budget and more than 22,000 employees, funding three of Amtrak’s busiest intercity rail services, providing support to more than 200 local and regional public transit agencies, maintaining approximately 20,000 bridges, overseeing 50,000 lane miles of highway, and providing permitting of more than 400 public-use airports.
