Daktronics Installs Large-Scale Digital Display at Los Angeles Union Station

A new large-format LED display at Los Angeles Union Station is showcasing how digital display technology is transforming transportation hubs into dynamic information centers capable of delivering real-time passenger communications, event messaging, and commercial content from a single platform.

Daktronics partnered with Morlin Asset Management to install the approximately 16-foot-tall by 100-foot-wide LED display at one of the busiest multimodal transportation facilities in the U.S.

The display serves as a digital canvas that can simultaneously present multiple streams of information across three independently managed content zones. This multi-zone capability enables operators to display transit information alongside event messaging, public announcements, advertising, and other content tailored to different audiences within the station.

As transportation centers evolve into multimodal mobility hubs, agencies are increasingly investing in advanced digital signage systems that do more than replace static displays. Modern LED platforms function as flexible communications tools that can distribute real-time information, support emergency messaging, generate advertising revenue, and adapt content instantly in response to changing operational conditions.

Because Union Station is a historic landmark, preserving the building’s architectural character was a key design consideration. Rather than permanently attaching the display to the structure, the project team installed a truss-supported mounting system that allows the display to remain movable while minimizing impacts to the facility.

Daktronics also supplied the display’s processing technology, which enables operators to manage content across the expansive LED canvas while maintaining high image quality in a busy indoor environment.

“This project required fast coordination and execution to meet a tight timeline,” said Spencer Degen, Daktronics vice president of transportation. “From initial concept through installation, teams worked together to deliver a flexible display solution that supports a variety of content and enhances the experience at Union Station.”

For the public transportation industry, advances in LED display technology are creating new opportunities to improve customer communications while maximizing the value of station infrastructure. High-resolution displays with sophisticated content management systems can dynamically prioritize passenger information during service disruptions, support wayfinding during major events, and integrate with broader digital communications platforms.
