CBP Distributes $71 Billion in Tariff Refunds

7/7/2026

According to a court filing from July 1, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has distributed $71.06 billion in tariff refunds to importers as of June 29. The refunds apply to country-of-origin tariffs, one of four major tariffs the Administration put in place that affected the public transportation industry.

The country-of-origin tariffs were in effect from February 1, 2025, until February 20, 2026. The U.S. Court for International Trade ruled on March 4 that CBP was required to issue refunds for duties collected from the country-of-origin tariffs, after the Supreme Court found the tariffs to be unconstitutional.

While the tariffs were in effect, CBP collected an estimated $166 billion from more than 330,000 importers, according to an earlier court filing. To date, importers have filed 213,939 applications for tariff refunds, of which 149,840 have been fulfilled.

The Administration is appealing a part of the Court of International Trade’s ruling that required reimbursement for duties that had already been finalized before the tariffs had been declared unconstitutional, and for importers that did not sue over the tariffs.
