As World Cup Nears, Safety Top Priority for Ontario’s Metrolinx

4/28/2026

Metrolinx is taking key steps to increase customer safety at Toronto’s Union Station and across the transit network ahead of its busy summer season, which includes seven World Cup games.

“As we prepare for an unprecedented surge of riders—more than half a million additional GO and UP Express customers during the World Cup alone—safety remains our top priority,” says Michael Lindsay, Metrolinx president and CEO.

“Enhanced transit safety officer coverage and increased police presence are all part of the comprehensive planning we’ve been doing for months to ensure every rider, whether they’re heading to a match, a concert, or their daily commute, feels confident on our system.”

Metrolinx is hiring more officers and placing special constables—trained in transit and de‑escalation—to work alongside Toronto police officers. Strengthened coordination is intended to result in faster response and better ability to respond to complex situations safely and professionally.

In addition to increased staff at stations, customer protection officers and other frontline transit workers are being equipped with body cameras.
