Brian Alberts, WSO-CSE, TSSP, PTSCTP, senior director–safety and advisory services for APTA, has been named a Mass Transit magazine Class of 40 Under 40 honoree. Alberts oversees all safety policy and standards initiatives for APTA.

The 40 Under 40 program recognizes individuals for their contributions to the transit industry. The magazine’s evaluation committee assessed more than 120 nominations for this round of awards. Nominees were rated on four criteria including job commitment, industry involvement and contribution, achievement in his or her position, and innovation in his or her field.

Alberts has more than 18 years of experience in the transportation, safety, environmental policy, and communications fields. He came to APTA in 2017 as director of safety. Before that, he was with FTA for more than five years, where he served most recently as policy lead and senior program analyst in the Office of System Safety. Before that, he was MTAP and public transit programs manager at AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials).

In 2022, Alberts was appointed to FTA’s Transit Advisory Committee for Safety (TRACS) by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. He also serves on FTA’s Transit Standards Working Group. At APTA, Alberts is staff advisor to the LGBTQ+ Resource Group, Safety and Security Certification Work Group, Bus Safety Committee, Rail Safety Committee, and Safety Coordinating Council, among others, and is staff liaison to the Standards Development Oversight Council, Security Affairs Committee, and Diversity and Inclusion Council, among others.

“The 2024 group of 40 Under 40 honorees represent the next wave of innovative leaders in the North American transit industry,” said Brandon Williamson, vice president, market leader, Endeavor Business Media Infrastructure and Aviation Group. “This year’s class consists of individuals who share a purpose to improve their communities through enhanced mobility.”
