APTA Introduces Transit Equity Tuesday at TRANSform

10/4/2024

APTA held its first ever Transit Equity Tuesday, a full day of dedicated programming focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the public transportation industry, Oct. 1 during the 2024 TRANSform in Anaheim, CA.

The day offered a fresh perspective on the DEI journey and the benefits and challenges of the initiative. Sessions focused on making the case for diversity, equity, and inclusion and how to set up individuals and organizations for success. Attendees were invited to sharpen their leadership skills and add to the tools available to them to advocate for, build, and sustain a culture of inclusion and belonging.

The day concluded with a session on the results and key lessons learned from APTA’s two-year Racial Equity Commitment Pilot Program, celebrating the 87 participating member organizations. Michele Wong Krause, APTA immediate past chair and chair of the APTA Diversity and Inclusion Council, remarked that APTA will be launching a new DEI Commitment Program, open to all APTA members, in the Spring of 2025.

“Creating an inclusive culture in the transit industry is a top priority for APTA, and for me personally as its chair,” said MJ Maynard, CEO, Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. “It is a shared leadership responsibility that requires enormous intentionality and sustained commitment.”

APTA promotes an inclusive culture that supports and celebrates the unique attributes and perspectives of its individual members, allowing each and every person to make their fullest contribution to the industry. APTA defines diversity as the inclusion of differences and similarities from all categories of members and covers such areas as disability, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, race and geographic origin, size of transit property or business member organization, all of which contribute to the fulfillment of APTA’s mission.
