Faster, More Connected Trips in Toronto and Seattle

Transit riders in Toronto, Canada, and Seattle, WA, gained faster, more reliable connections as Sound Transit opened Pinehurst Station and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) opened Scarborough Busway on September 30. The projects improve access to regional transit while shortening trips and expanding travel choices.

New Light Rail Connection in North Seattle

Sound Transit’s Pinehurst Station adds a new access point to the light rail system and connects to a new King County bus route. Trains are expected as frequently as every four minutes. Construction of the station was advanced ahead of schedule, allowing it to open five years earlier than originally planned.

Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine said, “Not only will this station connect more of North Seattle to a fast, reliable transportation option, the experience of creating it has taught us important lessons that we will apply in delivering future infill stations.”

At the station ribbon-cutting event, Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA) said the station makes light rail accessible to thousands more people and “is the latest example of federal funding creating jobs and expanding public transit in Northwest Washington.”

Snohomish County Executive and Sound Transit Board Chair Dave Somers said the station is “more than a new stop on the map”—it connects more people to jobs, education, neighborhoods, and other destinations across the region.

TTC welcomed hundreds of customers for a faster morning commute as the agency celebrated a significant milestone with the opening of the Scarborough Busway. The four-kilometer dedicated bus corridor will be utilized by multiple bus routes and is expected to serve more than 100,000 riders weekly.

The busway, which opened six months ahead of schedule, is expected to save an average of seven minutes per trip. TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali said, “This new corridor will make transit faster, more reliable, and more convenient for thousands of riders.”
