PATH Advances Railcar Modernization with Onboard Monitoring Technology

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has awarded a $10 million contract to Wi-Tronix to deploy onboard monitoring technology across more than half of the PATH commuter rail fleet. The technology will give PATH real-time access to railcar data, helping maintenance teams identify issues faster, improve car availability, and support federal requirements for onboard image and audio recording.

The contract grew out of PATH’s work with the Transit Tech Lab, a public-private initiative managed by the Partnership Fund for New York City that helps transit agencies test technologies focused on operational challenges. PATH began evaluating the Wi-Tronix system in 2023 through the lab, later expanding the effort after a 30-month pilot.

The system will replace time-consuming manual data retrieval with a connected platform that allows PATH to access onboard information remotely during maintenance reviews and service disruptions. PATH leaders said the effort is part of a broader modernization strategy for the 118-year-old railroad, following major investments in tracks, stations, railcars, and other infrastructure through the PATH Forward program.

“A safe and reliable PATH system is essential to the region’s economy and to the continued growth of communities like Jersey City, Harrison, Newark, and Hoboken,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “Modernizing a 118-year-old railroad means investing not only in its physical infrastructure, but in new technology that helps us provide better, more reliable service for every rider.”

Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia said the investment builds on recent physical infrastructure improvements by giving PATH teams faster access to information. “Giving our teams better information faster means they can address problems quicker and provide more reliable service for PATH riders,” she said.

PATH General Manager/Director Clarelle DeGraffe called the partnership between PATH, Wi-Tronix, and the Transit Tech Lab a “potential game-changer” in raising operational, safety, and maintenance standards to a new level.
