Austin Transit Partnership Selects Stadler for Light Rail Vehicles

Following a competitive procurement process, Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) selected global manufacturer Stadler to provide vehicles for the city’s first light rail system. Stadler has extensive operations in the United States and is headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT.
Each of the 21 all-electric trains is designed to carry approximately 240 passengers and will be based on Stadler’s CITYLINK model. Features include a low floor aligned with level boarding from the station platform, which eliminates stairs and enables full accessibility. Large windows with clear sightlines into and from the train are both aesthetic and safety features. Longer trains with multiple doorways are intended to move more people safely, daily and during special events.
During the design phase, there will be an opportunity for the Austin, TX, community to provide input on certain elements, such as color scheme, seating configuration, accessibility features, and wayfinding elements. “ATP has put the rider and community experience at the center of every project decision,” said Board Chair Veronica Castro de Barrera. “I’m delighted to know that Stadler has prioritized full accessibility of their vehicles and robust community engagement as a part of their proposal.”
ATP CEO Greg Canally said, “The action today demonstrates our commitment to build a light rail system that is right for Austin as ATP advances toward construction in 2027.” Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler’s North America Division, said the organization is “helping shape a new era of transit in Austin, one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.”
Phase 1 of the light rail system will consist of 15 stations along a nearly 10-mile route and will be expandable for future growth.
