Sound Transit Debuts New Railcars Acquired through Shared Procurement

6/3/2026

Sound Transit has begun placing new cars into service. The cars were procured through a shared purchase with California’s San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission and North County Transit District to reduce unit costs through a larger order.

The 11 new Alstom-built Sounder cars include crash energy management technology, energy-absorbing zones, and improved operator sightlines, along with rider amenities such as power outlets, updated seating, and improved bike storage. They are entering service in advance of surging crowds for World Cup matches and other summer events in the Seattle, WA, area.

“Safety and the passenger experience are part of Sound Transit’s DNA. These new cars embody both values, and we are pleased to bring them into service,” said Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine.

Prior to entering service, all new cars completed inspections, systems testing, and commissioning.
