TriMet Expands Security Network with More Blue-Light Phones

6/2/2026

TriMet is expanding its security network with additional blue-light phones across the Portland, OR, metropolitan area’s west side, extending a systemwide effort to make it easier for riders to quickly reach help. The new installations are designed to strengthen visible security and connect the public directly with the agency’s Security Operations Center.

By the end of June, TriMet expects to have 92 blue-light security phones in place across the system. The red towers and wall-mounted units, topped with blue lights, connect riders to trained dispatchers 24 hours a day at the push of a button. Each unit includes a live-view camera monitored by security staff, allowing dispatchers not only to receive calls but also to place outbound calls when they observe activity that requires attention.

According to TriMet, the Security Operations Center, added in late 2024, has delivered security gains, including 30 percent faster response times and a 40 percent improvement in de-escalating situations before they become more serious. Data collected at the centralized hub helps determine where and when security personnel should be deployed across the network.

The phone expansion is part of TriMet’s broader layered security strategy, which includes secured elevators and a growing network of 10,000 security cameras. Investments are aimed at reinforcing a visible security presence, improving coordination, and making the system feel safer for riders.
