JTA’s Autonomous Vehicle Service Adds Custom Shelters and Kiosks

Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s Neighborhood Autonomous Vehicle Innovation (NAVI) service now has 12 custom bus shelters and kiosks. NAVI launched last year as the nation’s first public transportation service powered by autonomous vehicles.
Through its Ultimate Urban Circulator program, JTA is taking a phased approach to expand transit connections across downtown Jacksonville and surrounding neighborhoods through autonomous vehicle technology and related infrastructure.
Balfour Beatty US, the design-build contractor for the project, partnered with JTA and Tolar on the installation. The shelters and kiosks support wayfinding, communications, and other passenger amenities at NAVI stops.
The shelters include branded glass panels, LED lighting, benches, and anti-graffiti finishes. The seven-foot kiosks feature double-sided outdoor displays and intercoms for rider information and accessibility needs.
Scott Williams, business development manager at Tolar Manufacturing Company, said, “The journey begins at the stop… By creating an inviting experience from the very start, we set the stage for riders to enjoy their entire journey on NAVI, making autonomous transit a trip worth looking forward to.”
