Caltrain Makes TIME’s Top 10 List of Influential Transportation Companies
5/14/2026

Caltrain—provider of rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, CA—has been named one of TIME magazine’s 10 most influential transportation companies of 2026. The magazine recognizes the agency’s electrification project and strong ridership growth following the launch of electric service.
The agency shifted to a modern electric fleet, which delivers faster and more frequent service while reducing emissions. On a typical day, the service carries the equivalent of three lanes of Highway 101 traffic—about 36,000 daily car trips—avoiding an estimated 828,000 miles of driving and 220 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each day.
“Electrifying the Caltrain corridor was a challenging task that required years of planning and effort,” said Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard. “Today, that hard work is paying off for millions of commuters every month, and it is gratifying to have these efforts recognized and celebrated.”
Since the launch of electrified service, Caltrain has received several awards including APTA’s 2025 Commuter Rail Safety Gold Award, Sustainable San Mateo County’s 2025 Sustainability Award, and the Associated General Contractors of America’s Build America Highway & Transportation Renovation Award.
