Maryland Governor’s Hitachi Rail Facility Visit Highlights Economic Development

5/13/2026

As part of a “Delivering for Maryland” tour, Governor Wes Moore made a stop at a state-of-the-art Hitachi Rail facility, highlighting vital investments in manufacturing job growth in the western part of the state. The facility, which opened in September, supports 1,300 jobs, including roles to harness AI and smart manufacturing principles.

Joined by state transportation leaders and elected representatives, the governor toured the factory floor and rode a test train to observe the manufacturing process. The carbon-neutral facility represents a $100 million capital investment by Hitachi and is supported by a $1.6 million state conditional loan.

The factory manufactures railcars for the Maryland Transit Administration and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Investments in public transit deliver economic returns—APTA’s 2026 Public Transportation Fact Book shows that every $1 invested returns $5 to the economy.

Rep. April McClain Delaney (MD-D) said, “I’m proud to work with Governor Moore and our public, private, and philanthropic partners to drive global investment that supports jobs and economic growth.”
