MassDOT Completes Bridge Superstructure Replacement Project Paired with Transit Upgrades

5/7/2026

Nearly nine months ahead of schedule, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) completed a bridge superstructure replacement and transit upgrade project in Boston and Somerville. The repaired Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge carries vehicles and pedestrians over the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Orange Line and commuter rail.

The structural work was paired with significant upgrades to transit, including the addition of dedicated bus-only lanes in the dense urban area. Previous bus lanes have been upgraded and expanded to improve reliability and efficiency. New bus lanes have been added for increased safety and more consistent travel times.

To reduce delays at red lights and help buses travel more efficiently through congested areas, transit signal priority was installed. Transit priority measures support MBTA’s Better Bus Project to increase service.

MassDOT is streamlining construction schedules and prioritizing projects that deliver immediate benefits for residents, such as improving reliability and reducing travel times across the transportation network. Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng thanked the early project completion to “strong collaboration between MassDOT, the MBTA, our municipal partners, Keolis, CSX, and our contractors.”
