New King County Metro TOD Development Boosts Mobility Access

A new transit-oriented housing community has opened in Seattle’s Northgate community. The development, Copperleaf, includes 235 apartments located next to Sound Transit’s Northgate Station, providing residents with access to light rail and local and regional bus routes.

Easy access to transportation expands opportunities for financially burdened households to reach jobs, education, and services. Grecia Guzman Carranza, a resident, said, “My family and I struggled for years to find a stable place to call home. This community is safe and peaceful. My kids are sleeping better, with more energy for school. Copperleaf Northgate has made a huge difference for all of us.”

King County Metro provided land for the development, which was previously used for transit parking. Community Roots Housing and BRIDGE Housing worked with the county to redevelop the property. Funding was supported by King County’s Housing Finance Program, the Seattle Housing Authority, Bank of America, and the Community Preservation Corporation.

“This is the largest investment King County has made in affordable housing, and reflects our commitment to building a region where everyone has access to a safe, stable home,” said King County Executive Girmay Zahilay. “I’m grateful to BRIDGE Housing, Community Roots Housing, and our many partners for making Copperleaf possible. Together, we’re building housing that meets the needs of our community and ensures more people have access to safe, stable housing connected to transit and opportunity.”
