Submissions Open: APTA 2026 Rail Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Awards

Maryland MTA Chief Safety Officer Michael Winger and Deputy Director of Light Rail Operations Darnell Sellers accept a 2025 APTA Rail Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Award.

APTA’s Rail Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Awards recognize APTA transportation systems that have achieved success in addressing specific safety or security program areas. Submissions are open until April 27.

This year’s categories include:

  • Safety
  • Security
  • Emergency management
  • Safe, effective, and clean transit (new one-time award)

The categories align with the efforts of APTA’s SECURE Task Force. Awards will be grouped by (1) commuter/passenger/suburban rail, (2) heavy rail (including subway) (3) light rail/streetcar, and (4) contracted service provider.

Award winners will be announced at the 2026 Rail Conference in Baltimore, MD, June 28 to July 1. Evaluation criteria, nomination procedures, submission instructions, and video from prior awards are posted on the APTA website.
